Large Slipware Bowl With Rastelbinder Repair
An overtly large continental earthenware slipware bowl with a Rastelbinder repair. This is comprised of an intricate network of fine wire.
“Special skill was needed for the repair of broken clay vessels. These artisans (der Rastelbinder) were able to assemble broken clay jugs and cover them with a wire mesh covering so that the vessels were again watertight.”, (see: http://www.burgenland-roma.at/roma2000alt/ethnolokal/b12.htm for more information).
The bowl, early 19th century, likely hailing from the Austrian Empire. Whilst the repair is from the latter part of the century, possibly German or from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
